Manchester United Football Club have been struggling lately. Jose Mourinho’s men can’t buy a comfortable victory, with the self-proclaimed Special One’s side sitting out of the continental qualification places in the table. That’s extremely worrying.
Mourinho’s job just got a whole lot tougher, too. The Portuguese met the media today before the Red Devils play Southampton tomorrow, with the manager confirming that Alexis Sanchez will be out of action until 2019.
The Chilean picked up a hamstring issue in training and it’s seemingly an extremely serious one. Now I know that Sanchez hasn’t really enjoyed the perfect start to life at Old Trafford, but being without him for the hectic winter period is a massive loss.
“In our club, when a player doesn’t play, it’s always [reported that it’s] because the player isn’t behaving and has disciplinary issues. Of course that’s not the case again.” Mourinho told reporters, including ManUtd.com.
“He has an important injury. I don’t want to risk by saying for how long [he will be out] but from the top of my experience, I would say he’s not playing [again] this year.”
I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that Sanchez was pivotal in wins against both Juventus and AFC Bournemouth. It was his movement, off-ball ability and energy that made those victories possible. The fact that he offers something different, in comparison to Romelu Lukaku, gives something defences to think about.
On the flip side, it presents an opportunity for the aforementioned Lukaku, or Marcus Rashford, to prove their worth and earn the starting striker role. Hopefully, someone can get that confidence-boosting strike then go on a real goalscoring run.
Get well soon, Alexis!
