Manchester United have certainly been stern defensively at the start of this season, with Louis van Gaal clearly drilling his side into becoming a more solid outfit and not leaking goals like they did at times throughout his first campaign in charge.
That has certainly worked so far, and at the heart of that has been perhaps the biggest improver at the club over the last twelve months – Chris Smalling.
His performances have been duly recognised by the Premier League as he has earned a nomination for the Player of the Month Award, alongside the likes of Andre Ayew, Riyad Mahrez, David Silva and Bafetimbi Gomis.
It has been great to witness Smalling’s complete transformation recently. Since his horror show in the away Manchester derby last term he hasn’t put a foot wrong and has certainly been the best defender at the club by a country mile.
