Manchester United have had to use plenty of young players in the defence over recent weeks, due to a whole host of injuries in that area of the field. One man who has come into the side and done a superb job is Guillermo Varela, the 22-year old Uruguayan right-back.
According to Ovación, Varela is set to renew his contract at Old Trafford after Louis van Gaal has been impressed by his displays over recent weeks, and feels he more than deserves an extended deal in Manchester.
At this point in time Varela is certainly a backup to Matteo Darmian, and probably Antonio Valencia when he returns too. However he has shown he is more than capable of filling in when needed, and perhaps Louis van Gaal sees him as an eventual to successor to Valencia, who turns thirty this summer.
