Manchester United are eyeing a £35million move to sign Leicester City defender Harry Maguire, the Daily Mirror reports.
Jose Mourinho is apparently a huge admirer of the Englishman, who has impressed greatly this term. Furthermore, the report reckons that Chris Smalling could be the one to lose his place to the 25-year-old.
Defence has been a problem area for Mourinho since he arrived. Yes, Eric Bailly has done well, but outside of him, you could argue that the other three positions still need to be worked on. Finding the Ivory Coast international a top-level partner would be a good place to start.
Personally, I like Maguire. However, is he ready to come in and start for a club like Manchester United? I’m not so sure.
It just doesn’t feel like a move Mourinho would usually make. More often than not, he goes for experience over unproven quality, and I cannot help but feel this move would be nothing but a sideways step.
Is Maguire a marked improvement on the aforementioned Smalling and Phil Jones? In my books, not really. It seems a gamble to take and honestly, I’d much prefer to see £35million spent on a Toby Alderweireld…
