The Champions League returned to Old Trafford on Tuesday evening, but on top of that, we also witnessed the return of a player from a lengthy injury lay-off; Ashley Young. The Englishman made his return as the starting right-back, and it felt like he’d never been away.
From the first minute, he looked right at home in Jose Mourinho’s system as the right-back. The former Villa man did his defensive duties brilliantly, whilst also offering an outlet in attack – something that we’ve lacked in at the start of the season.
His moment of the match came as the first half was winding down. Young whipped in a wonderful ball into Marouane Fellaini who duly nodded home. On top of that, he continued to be positive with attacking runs, which Mourinho will be happy with.
It’s crazy that he put in such a high-level performance without having any pre-season whatsoever, and now it gives the gaffer another option to make the most out of – and when you have someone as versatile as Young, it’s great to have him to be able to call upon.
As you’d imagine, Twitter users were buzzing about Young’s performance, and it was nice to read all the positive comments sent his way.

Take a bow Ashley Young. What a fine performance after such a long lay off. Proved again what a great crosser he is. Fellaini also excelled.

Ashley Young did more for United tonight than Valencia has in years. Great cross, a teasing shot. Great assist for the first. #MUFC
