Manchester United were pushing desperately to bring in a new centre-back over the summer, but to Jose Mourinho’s frustration, nobody was signed.
Now, according to Mirror Football per Bristol Live, the self-proclaimed Special One is ready to make the move for one of his former Chelsea title-winners.
That man is Gary Cahill. Now 32, the Englishman has fallen out-of-favour since Maurizio Sarri took charge, and it looks as though the veteran could be on the move – even as early as January.
At that stage in his career, six appearances just isn’t going to cut it for him as he wants to be playing week-in-week-out.
I’d certainly love to see someone with a bit more experience come in and command that back line, but is Cahill the right move? As we’ve seen with Nemanja Matic, deals for the older player have a short shelf-life, and the man from Serbia already looks like he’s finished.
There could be some sense into it as a bit-part player, but that’s about it. Is Cahill going to contribute to a title win? Not a chance. I also wouldn’t like to see him playing every game because he just doesn’t have the legs for that…
