Manchester United interested in signing 22-year-old defensive midfield powerhouse: report

Manchester United have shown an interest in signing Borussia Dortmund defensive midfielder, Julian Weigl, according to The Independent.

Jose Mourinho is keen on adding a defensive-minded central player in January, in order to free up Paul Pogba and allow the 24-year-old to play in a more advanced role.

Weigl, 22, has been in excellent form since returning from injury, and is also attracting attention from Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

The young man is an exceptionally gifted talent, who’d come into our team straight away and improve things from day one.

This move looks to be ideal for the Red Devils, but it’s going to be tough to pull off in the January window, and maybe a summer move for him would make him much more obtainable.

With that said, I’d love to see United get a deal done. Pogba flourishes when he has the confidence of knowing that there is two midfielders in-behind to protect him, and Weigl would sit nicely alongside Nemanja Matic in a three-man midfield.

On top of that, both Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini (who is yet to sign a new contract), will need replacing in the not too distant future, so it’s certainly a believable transfer story.
