Manchester United want to sign Arsenal right-back Bacary Sagna, according to the Daily Mail. Sagna, 31, will be out of contract in the summer at Arsenal, and it was widely expected that he’d move to Manchester City on a free transfer before the World Cup.
However incoming United manager Louis van Gaal is a fan of Sagna’s, and he wants United to challenge City for his signature. The 62-year old Dutchman wants competition for Rafael at right-back, as the Brazilian has been the only natural right-back at the club for a few seasons now.
City are still thought to be in pole position, but the interest from United could cause Sagna to rethink his plans before penning any potential deal at the Etihad stadium. City have reportedly offered Sagna a four-year deal with £100k-a-week on the table, meaning he’ll be 35 when the contract expires.
I’m all for United challenging City for Sagna’s signature, but those wages seem huge for someone who’ll be in his mid-thirties when the deal expires.
Rafael definitely needs some competition at right-back, but I’d much prefer United went in for someone a bit younger. Seamus Coleman would be my #1 target.
