After suffering a huge defensive crisis already this season, Manchester United are preparing to dip into the January market as Louis van Gaal looks set to bolster his back line. According to The Mirror, Gerard Pique is at the top of that list, and the Spaniard could be set for a sensational return to Old Trafford after being dropped by Barcelona.
The 27-year old Spaniard has been at the heart of Barcelona’s back line since leaving United for Catalonia, but this year Pique has found himself warming the Nou Camp bench, as the new manager has favoured Jeremy Mathieu and Javier Mascherano.
Bringing Pique back would be a shrewd move by Van Gaal. He knows the club inside out, he’s lived in Manchester before so it’d take him less time to re-adapt to live in England, and he’s approaching the peak of his powers in terms of age and experience. Pique has been there and done it all, and he’d immediately walk into the United dressing room and emerge as a senior figure.
Our defence is full of young talent and prospects, and we desperately need that elder figure who can guide them through the tough matches, and help out on and off the pitch. It remains to be seen whether Pique himself would want the move, but its one I’d imagine most fans would certainly welcome.
