Manchester United look to tie up Vermaelen deal

Manchester United are keen to complete a deal for Arsenal centre-back and captain Thomas Vermaelen, claim the Daily Star. The Belgian defender, rather worryingly barely played for club or country over the past two years. The Daily Star also claim a move for Stefan de Vrij is just around the corner too.

Personal terms with Vermaelen are already agreed if you believe reports, and all thats left is for the clubs to agree on a fee for the 28-year old. Manchester United were looking to pay around £7-8million for Vermaelen, however Arsenal are holding out for somewhere closer to £11million.

We’d still need one more centre-back though, and although Louis van Gaal isn’t giving up his pursuit of Mats Hummels just yet, Stefan de Vrij could be another potential suitor. Van Gaal knows De Vrij’s game inside-out from their time together with the national team, and he’d probably come in and slot straight into the starting line-up.

Would Vermaelen be a good signing? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.

  1. I don’t think he will slot in at United… If he was any good, he would be Arsenals 1st choice over the past 2 seasons and being injury prone, slow and he turns like a horse&trailor, I think he is a bad buy. Matts Hummels and De Vrij are undoubtedly better options. I still believe that given LVG ability to improve individuals, Jones and Smalling could thrive under the Dutchman
