Manchester United man on transfer standby, still could leave club this summer: report

Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian could still leave Old Trafford this summer, with the Italian on transfer standby.

That’s according to the Manchester Evening News, with Serie A clubs still circling before their transfer deadline shuts this week.

It’s a weird situation. Darmian started against Leicester City on Friday night, but he knows that he’s not Jose Mourinho’s first choice. The only reason he played is due to injuries decimating that area of the squad.

We all know he isn’t good enough to play week-in-week-out, despite a good pre-season tour. He was pretty awful against The Foxes, we’ve been given no indicator as to that changing anytime soon.

To me, I’m baffled that Timothy Fosu-Mensah was shipped out on loan to Fulham. He’s probably already better than his Italian counterpart, surely it would have made more sense to give him the game time.

It all depends on how long Valencia is out for. We really cannot afford to be playing without an out-and-out right-back for a prolonged period. Darmian may well stay until at least January if the Ecuador international isn’t going to be back anytime soon.

Credit to the player, though, not once has he kicked up a fuss. Instead, he’s embraced the regular playing time and that takes guts.
