Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has been called up to the England squad, despite only returning to action for his club from on the bench last weekend. The 34-year old faced a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering ligament damage, and it shows just how important Carrick is to his country that he has already been included.
With the retirement of Frank Lampard, England didn’t have that senior man in midfield who can come in and provide that pivotal experience in the dressing room. Michael Carrick is now that man, and he’ll be a player that youngsters like Jack Wilshere and Jordan Henderson can learn from.
