After the group stage draw was made just under a week ago and Manchester United learned their Europa League fate, Red Devils fans were hit with the reality that they’ll be no Champions League football played this season.
Well today, the Red Devils announced their Europa League squad for the group stages of the tournament, with a 24-strong list handed into UEFA.
The list is pretty much as you’d expect, though the surprise name is young goalkeeper Matej Kovar, who is included as the third-choice goalkeeper as both Joel Pereira and Dean Henderson are currently out on loan.
As you can see below, there are no youngsters like Mason Greenwood, Angel Gomes and Tahith Chong named. Don’t worry, these will all presumably be on the B List, which United reiterate isn’t ‘presented’ as of yet.
For me, this is a real opportunity to put faith in guys like Gomes, Greenwood, James Garner and so on. What does Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have to lose? This is the perfect chance to see these guys in competitive action for the first time. Who knows, if they impress, they could force their way into the regular starting line-up for Premier League games shortly after.
Anyway, for now, here’s the list in full:
Eric Bailly, Diogo Dalot, David De Gea, Fred, Daniel James, Matej Kovar, Victor Lindelof, Anthony Martial, Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic, Marcos Rojo, Sergio Romero.
Jesse Lingard, Scott McTominay, Andreas Pereira, Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, Axel Tuanzebe.
Lee Grant, Phil Jones, Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Ashley Young.
