Manchester United have told Arsenal that Chris Smalling will cost The Gunners £25million in the summer, the Daily Star claim in an exclusive.
Arsene Wenger apparently has a long-standing interest in the England international and Manchester United could be willing to part ways with him this summer, as Jose Mourinho looks to overhaul the defence.
Personally, I always felt this term would be make or break for the centre-half, and for the most part, he’s struggled. If the Red Devils can get anywhere close to £25million to let the former Fulham player leave, then that’d be a great piece of business.
Usually, I’d be against selling someone to a direct rival, but can you honestly say that Smalling is going to make Arsenal stronger? I’m not so sure.
Mourinho makes his names by making his sides hard to beat, but when you’ve got Smalling and/or Phil Jones in the back four, you’re always going to find it tough. The pair are so error-prone it’s untrue, and when they’re playing together, you know you’re in for a nail-biting afternoon.
If United could sell at least one of these guys in the summer and replace him with real quality, the club’s overall outlook would suddenly look much better.
