I think it’s fair to say that Manchester United have had a pretty diabolical transfer window to this point, with the only major signing coming in the form of Fred.
The Brazil midfielder certainly looked good against Real Madrid, but the Red Devils need more. Now, an opportunity could have fallen right into their laps.
According to German media outlet Bild, translated by the Manchester Evening News, United have been offered the opportunity to sign Axel Witsel this summer, in a deal worth just £17million.
However, Jose Mourinho is reluctant to spend the cash on the 29-year-old, who featured heavily for Belgium during their excellent World Cup campaign.
Witsel currently plies his trade in the Chinese Super League, so you can see why he probably wants a move back to European football. At his age, the potential is there for one final, big money career move, but he better act quickly with time dwindling down on this window.
Perhaps Mourinho may have been more interested in taking the punt on Witsel if his international teammate, Marouane Fellaini, didn’t commit his long-term future to the Old Trafford club. They’re similar types of footballers built in a style that the self-proclaimed Special One loves.
Anyway, time is running out on the transfer period and it’s fair to say I’m getting rather concerned. Hopefully, Edward Woodward has a plan…
