Manchester United planning £40m summer move for Carrick replacement: report

Manchester United Football Club have an embarrassment of riches at their disposal, and that became even more evident last summer with a world record move for Paul Pogba. You’d imagine (and hope), that Jose Mourinho has huge ideas for the upcoming transfer window, too.

With the next summer transfer period looming, there are rumours aplenty flying about. The latest one comes from The Sun, and they are making a bold claim.

Their report linked above states that Jose Mourinho and Manchester United want to bring in none other than Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, Eric Dier. Valued at around £40million, the self-proclaimed Special One sees the Englishman as a perfect replacement for the ageing Michael Carrick, who’ll have a testimonial when this season ends.

Eric Dier has really been making a name for himself over the last twelve months or so, and all credit to him for that. He’s now become a regular in the England set-up as well, but I do wonder, is he really that good?

To me, it feels like he’s your bog-standard holding midfielder, who won’t do anything out of the ordinary but will do a job for you. Personally, I feel that both Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba are far superior central-midfielders and unless we plan on playing a trio in midfield, I’m just not sure where he’d fit in.

You’ll also have to consider the Daniel Levy factor. He’s a proper businessman and there is no way he’d let another player leave easily. Particularly one who is English, which tends to come with its own premium. For me, I’d like to see the money spent elsewhere and I think we can do better than Eric Dier.
