Manchester United are planning to make a shock move to sign Middlesbrough midfielder, Martin de Roon. That’s according to a report from Italian media outlet Tuttomercatoweb, translated by The Sun. However, the Red Devils could face competition for his signature, with Lazio and Atalanta interested.
The Teeside club signed him just last summer for £12million, but after their relegation then he could be on his way out in a cut-price deal worth around £10million.
Apparently, former Boro boss Aitor Karanka has recommended De Roon to his pal Jose Mourinho, and it seems like the self-proclaimed Special One is at least weighing up making a move for the 26-year-old Dutchman.
At the end of the day, he isn’t a player who could come in and immediately make our starting line-up better. However, when you consider the fact that we’ll have more games to play due to our participation in the Champions League, he may well be a good squad player to have around.
In terms of style and position, he’s a box-to-box midfielder with bundles of energy, and that isn’t something we really have in our current squad at the moment. It may seem like an underwhelming addition on paper, but I think it may well be an astute piece of business.
