Brazil international midfielder Fred is at the heart of a cross-town transfer battle between Manchester United and Manchester City, according to the Manchester Evening News, per The Express.
Although the report claims that Pep Guardiola is confident in landing Fred’s signature, the Red Devils could have an ace up their sleeve, with the player’s representatives keen to hear what the Old Trafford club have to offer.
The 24-year-old has been in excellent form for Shakhtar Donetsk this term and he could well be the midfielder that Manchester United have so desperately craved, in order to free up Paul Pogba.
To me, this just feels like a classic case of an agent trying to ramp up interest in his client in order to pocket himself more money. That’s just the modern-day game and he’d be foolish if he didn’t try to tempt Jose Mourinho into making his move.
When the summer does roll around I’d be extremely surprised if United didn’t make a couple of moves to bring in some new midfielders. We’re looking particularly lightweight in that area of the field at the moment, and strengthening that position could be the key to a run at the Premier League title next term.
