Manchester United ready to listen to offers for 27-year-old this summer: report

With just one huge game left to play, Manchester United’s first season under the watchful eye of Jose Mourinho is drawing to a close. With the end of the football period comes the start of the transfer window, and the rumours are already beginning to flow…

According to ESPN’s sources, one player that Mourinho is ready to listen to offers for is none other than centre-back, Chris Smalling. The Englishman, 27, was one of our top performers last season under Louis van Gaal, but this year, he hasn’t really got going whatsoever.

The emergence of Eric Bailly alongside Marcos Rojo (before he got injured), has meant limited appearances for Smalling, and then he himself suffered a pretty lengthy injury.

Since his return to the first-team fold, Smalling has looked every bit the non-league player he once was, and that must be a concern for the coaching staff at the Theatre of Dreams.

Positionally, he hasn’t been great. He looks scared to make a tackle and on the whole, he’s just been very clumsy. This must be making Mourinho think about whether Smalling has got what it takes to play in his team for the long-term, and genuinely, if we can get a decent fee for him as well as being able to draft in a replacement, I wouldn’t be wholly against the move.
