Amid strong interest from Barcelona, Manchester United are preparing a £15million bid for Thomas Vermaelen, claim the Daily Mail. The Arsenal captain is believed to prefer a move to Old Trafford over the Camp Nou, and the 28-year old is waiting for Louis van Gaal to make an official bid.
Van Gaal’s three at the back system certainly requires at least one more centre-half signing. The three senior defenders we currently have are all young and fairly injury prone, so United definitely need to splash the cash.
Vermaelen knows the English game well from his time at Arsenal, and the Belgian’s attributes suit the Premier League perfectly. At 28, he’s approaching the peak of his career, and he’d certainly blend well with the younger defenders at Old Trafford.
Arsenal’s reluctance to sell to a Premier League rival could see the London club demand an extra £5million from Manchester United as a result, because they’d obviously prefer to sell to Barcelona.
