I think it’s fair to say that Manchester United had a solid month of January, with Jose Mourinho’s side making it to the final of the EFL Trophy, and continuing their unbeaten run in the Premier League. However, the team and coaches won’t be settling for that, and now they’ll want to push up the table.
As we’re now at the start of February, the club took to Twitter to announce that January’s Player of the Month award was Antonio Valencia – a right-back who has been in excellent form recently, and all credit to him.
The Ecuadorian came to Old Trafford as a right-winger, but a Louis van Gaal masterstroke (yes, I did say that), was to convert him to a fullback, and my, have Manchester United reaped the benefits.
Valencia has turned into one of the best right-backs in the country, with his aggressive style of defending, pure strength and speed to help his team on the counter attack.
It goes to show how well he performed throughout the month, that he even missed the last couple of matches (Hull and Wigan in the cup), but he was still able to scoop the award.
Congratulations, Tony V!
