Jose Mourinho is risking losing Juan Mata on a free transfer this summer, according to ESPN.
Manchester United have delayed making a decision regarding triggering a one-year extension that the Spaniard has in his current contract, and at this point in time, that option hasn’t been taken up by the Red Devils.
It means that currently, Mata is free to talk to overseas clubs about the possibility of signing a pre-contract deal in the summer, meaning United would lose him on a free transfer.
Mata was signed by David Moyes over four years ago now, with the 29-year-old becoming an integral part of the squad ever since. Not only that, though, he’s an extremely likeable guy to have in and around the locker room, and not once has he moaned when he isn’t starting every single week.
For me, it’s an absolute no-brainer to activate this clause. At the very least it gives United another twelve months to weigh up their options before making a final decision, and at the very least, they would be able to recoup some sort of transfer fee for him if they chose to move Mata on in the summer.
