Manchester United have themselves a new centre-back!
The club today confirmed that they’ve reached an agreement to sign Harry Maguire from Leicester City, with the 26-year-old putting pen to paper on a six-year contract with the option for a further year.
Infamously nicknamed Slabhead by his former teammate Jamie Vardy, Maguire joined The Foxes in 2017 and became a vital cog in their defence. Now, the Red Devils have got their man.
It has been about five years since us fans have had this much faith in a centre-back signing made by United. Maguire has proven he can do it in the English top tier for both Hull City and Leicester. Now, he’ll be ready to take things up another notch.
Not only will Maguire instantly be regarded as the best defender at Old Trafford, United have also secured themselves a player who’s a real on-field leader. The centre-half doesn’t mind barking orders at his teammates when the situation arises, while his organisational skills will also come in handy.
I’m just delighted that Maguire is now a Red Devil. This is such a proud day for him and his whole family and I bet he cannot wait to get started.
I guess for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer it’s now about deciding whether to throw him straight into the mix against Chelsea next Sunday…
Upon signing the contract, Maguire said:
“I am delighted to have signed for this great club. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Leicester and would like to thank everyone at the club, and the fans, for their fantastic support over the past two seasons. However, when Manchester United come knocking on your door, it is an incredible opportunity.”
”From my conversations with the manager, I am excited about the vision and plans he has for the team. It’s clear to see that Ole is building a team to win trophies. I am now looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and getting the season started.”
Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer added:
“Harry is one of the best centre-backs in the game today and I am delighted we have secured his signature. He is a great reader of the game and has a strong presence on the pitch, with the ability to remain calm under pressure – coupled with his composure on the ball and a huge presence in both boxes – I can see he will fit well into this group both on and off the pitch.
”He has a great personality and is a fantastic addition to the club.
“I would like to welcome Harry to Manchester United and we are looking forward to working with him as we prepare for the new season.”
Welcome to Manchester, Harry!
