Manchester United summer signing admits he rejected Manchester City

Manchester United Football Club and Jose Mourinho’s first signing of the summer was a relatively unkown one at the time, with our new gaffer making Eric Bailly his first official transfer. We’ve only seen glimpses of the young man, but he looks to be a real hot prospect.

The 22-year-old has further endeared himself to the Old Trafford faithful, by revealing the fact that he rejected a move to local rivals, Manchester City. Bailly confirms that Pep Guardiola and Yaya Toure asked him to represent the blue half of the city, instead, Bailly took the advice of Didier Drogba who has worked with Mourinho previously.

“I prefer Mourinho in part because of Didier Drogba, who Mourinho has worked with,” Bailly began.

“I know Didier from the Ivory Coast, he is a friend, and he spoke to me and told me, ‘Jose did this for me, Jose did that for me.”

“I didn’t speak to Pep Guardiola but the second [assistant] manager called me and Mourinho called me as well.

“He said come and play for me.”

“Yaya also called me and said that I should come to City but once Jose spoke to me and Didier gave me advice, I knew straight away that I wanted to play for him.” Bailly concluded.

At the end of the day, Manchester United really is the place to be at the moment. Jose Mourinho is looking to build a legacy here and he has certainly made a brilliant start to life at his new club.

As for Bailly, he is clearly a talented centre-back. His composure and calmness on the ball is excellent to see – particularly for a man of just twenty-two. It will take time for him to develop into a world class defender though, and he will make mistakes along the way. It’s up to us to back him up.
