Manchester United target Roma defender

Manchester United have made Roma defender Mehdi Benetia their #1 transfer target for the summer, claim the Daily Express. The Moroccan international signed for his current side from fellow Italian club Udinese in a deal worth £11m last summer, but he could be on the move after just 12 months if the fee is tempting enough.

United have been linked with a whole host of defenders due to the fact that we’re almost certain to lose Rio Ferdinand, and Nemanja Vidic has already said he’s leaving when his current deal expires in June. Both Jan Vertonghen and Luke Shaw have been mentioned in recent weeks, but Benetia has shot right to the top of my wish list.

The 26-year old would make a great Premier League defender, and in my opinion he’d suit the English style of play perfectly. He’s tall, great in the air and he has pace to burn too. All aspects of his game look tailor made to cope with powerful attackers like Christian Benteke as well as the more agile players like Luis Suarez.

He’d cost around the £20m mark which isn’t too bad in the current market. He isn’t on huge wages at Roma either, so it’d be a good deal all-round for United.
