Manchester United Football Club have made their first signing, with Victor Lindelof becoming Jose Mourinho’s first incoming transfer of the summer. Now, the Red Devils are looking to press on with bringing in other new faces as they look to build upon a solid first season under new management.
One player the club are apparently looking at is Eric Dier, and now reports coming from the Daily Telegraph state that Tottenham Hotspur have told United that the Englishman will cost them £50million – a player that Mourinho wants to get signed.
The gaffer sees him as the long-term replacement for Michael Carrick, who put pen to paper on a new one-year deal, keeping him at Old Trafford for the next twelve months.
At 23, we’d definitely get some longevity out of the England international, and you’d expect at least a decade of service if he went on to be a success here. With that said, I cannot help but feel underwhelmed.
Dier is a good player, but he’s not of that elite level and that is what a side with the calibre of Manchester United should be aiming for. He’s certainly not an upgrade on an ageing Carrick, and I’d much prefer the club to be looking at someone who could offer more mobility as well as defensive diligence as that is what we’ve lacked.
