Manchester United could be prepared to break their current transfer record to sign Chelsea’s Juan Mata in a bid to put their season back on track, according to the Telegraph. Juan Mata himself would be open to a move with the World Cup looming, and Mourinho is prepared to sell the midfielder as he isn’t part of Jose’s plans.
Although Manchester United officials insisted that no bid has been made as of last night, I personally feel this move could happen, and is in the interest of all parties. Mourinho is a clever man, and Chelsea have already played Manchester United twice meaning Mata couldn’t come back to haunt Chelsea’s league hopes. However Manchester United play Arsenal and City in the coming months, and Juan Mata would considerably improve our chances against those two, therefore helping Chelsea’s title bid.
With Eden Hazard, Oscar and Willian in front of the 25-year old in the Chelsea pecking order, a whole host of clubs are expected to be interested in Mata, who has been limited to just thirteen league appearances, most of which have come off the bench.
My concern is that Wayne Rooney could be used as a makeweight in the deal. If not an immediate swap deal involving the two, Chelsea will probably have first refusal on Wayne Rooney in the summer.
Signing Juan Mata would have a similar effect to that of Mesut Ozil joining Arsenal. He plays in a position we don’t particularly need to strengthen in right now, but he’d be a huge boost to the whole squad. Imagine a front four of Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata, Adnan Januzaj and Robin van Persie. Wow.
