Manchester United’s move for Victor Lindelof is all-but confirmed, and immediately, that got me thinking about which Red Devil was in danger of being sold. Now, it looks as though we have our answer and it comes courtesy of the Daily Telegraph.
Matt Law writes that Chris Smalling will be sold by the Old Trafford club this summer, and there are already a few parties interested, with West Brom, West Ham and Everton keen.
The report says that the Englishman could be available for as little as £15million, which wouldn’t be a bad purchase in the modern market.
You have to remember that this is an experienced footballer right now, who has had some brilliant success at Manchester United. However, Mourinho clearly feels that he isn’t good enough to be a part of this squad in the long-term.
For me, Mourinho made his mind up when Smalling spent six weeks out with an injury at the back end of the season. Our manager loves players that he can rely upon, and we’ve seen the 27-year-old spend far too much time on the sidelines this season.
The fact that we’re bringing in another centre-back tells you all you need to know about Mourinho’s thoughts about our current defensive options, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Phil Jones eventually follows Smalling out of the door…
