Manchester United’s current squad at the moment has been extremely hit and miss in terms of performances. Jose Mourinho will need time to get everything he needs in place to deliver trophies here, and that includes a culling of those fringe players who just aren’t good enough.
One player who may have to leave Old Trafford to kickstart his career is Memphis Depay. The Dutchman just hasn’t impressed since moving to the Theatre of Dreams, and now he has been excluded from today’s match day squad that’ll take on Fenerbahce.
Big things were expected of the 22-year-old when he moved to England, and although we’ve seen glimpses of his capabilities, he hasn’t been anywhere near consistent enough.
Fenerbahce manager, and his Dutch compatriot Dick Advocaat has had his say on proceedings, and urged Depay to leave Manchester United as soon as possible to get regular playing time elsewhere. and urged Depay to leave Manchester United as soon as possible to get regular playing time elsewhere.
“The potential is there for him to be a good player. You cannot lose that, he has the quality to be a top player, but the problem for him is that there are so many quality players in that squad.” Advocaat began.
“So for himself it is important to start playing regularly at the age that he is at – otherwise the way, I think, is that maybe he has to find another solution [club] because he is too good to sit on the bench. I still believe in him, he has the right mentality, the right character to play for United, but there are so many options there. Regular playing time will help his progression.”
He does have a point, but urging him to leave isn’t ideal. It puts that thought in his mind that a move away is the only thing for him to do now, and we could well see him get shipped off as early as January. Maybe try him out on a loan deal for six months and see how that goes before decided to sell him on a permanent basis.
