Manchester United’s Chris Smalling put in a simply horrific performance during the Manchester derby last weekend, which lasted just 39 minutes after he was sent off for two bookable offences in the first half. Since then, United fans and pundits alike have slated the young Englishman, and a move away from the club could be on the cards.
According to The Mirror, Arsenal are interested in acquiring Smalling’s services in January, as Arsenal too lack numbers defensively. Arsenal have a formidable defensive pairing in Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny, but they need strength in numbers badly. Chris Smalling certainly provides that, and with bags of experience under his belt at a young age, he’d do a good job there.
If the fee was right, I’d be more than happy to let him go as it’d be a good deal all round. United need real quality in that area of the field, and at least one world class signing is a must next summer.
