Manchester United’s reported transfer target speaks out on possible move to Old Trafford

Manchester United have gotten off to a slow start in pursuit of their summer transfer targets. Although I’m sure the board members and club officials are working hard behind closed doors, it is always nice to see that first transfer pushed over the line.

It wasn’t that long ago when Portuguese media outlet Record were claiming the Red Devils had agreed a deal with SL Benfica for the sale of Victor Lindelof. Since then, there have been no updates in regards to that move, until now. The 22-year-old has responded to the rumours directly.

Lindelof, who is known as the Ice Man, was asked directly about the possibility of a move to Manchester United. The centre-back answered:

“I have my contract with Benfica and I am happy there,” said Lindelof, as per the Daily Mirror. “I will always say that. People can write what they want, I can’t do anything about that.”

I guess this is just the standard answer that we all should have expected. A player is hardly going to come out and confirm nor deny a deal if there is still a long way to go in terms of all parties agreeing upon a deal. Heck, we’re still not sure as to whether this is a genuine rumour.

In my opinion, we should be looking at signing at least one centre-back this summer. Both Eric Bailly and Marcos Rojo looked brilliant last season, but the Argentine is injured and even when he’s back fit, help is required. Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have been underwhelming, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see at least one of those guys getting let go.

That begs the question as to whether Lindelof is the right man. Personally, I’ve not seen him play an awful lot but Mourinho is quite clearly a fan. With that said, I’d like to see someone with a bit more experience and know how come in. Perhaps Pepe, who has recently confirmed he will be leaving Real Madrid this summer?
