As we all know, Manchester United are heading into the international break sitting atop of the tree along with Manchester City. Squads are built in the off-season, and Jose Mourinho is the absolute master at that, as we’re finding out right now.
Often, it’s those unsung heroes who can come in and make a difference. Mourinho has put his trust in three guys, in particular, who could well be pivotal in any potential title charge that Manchester United make.
Phil Jones
He’s playing some sensational football right now, and it’s all down to the manager. Jones has the trust of the self-proclaimed Special One, and that’s all he needed it seems.
The England international is putting his head on absolutely everything, winning his fair share of 50/50 challenges and leading that defence vocally. What a start to the season he’s made, and although tougher tests are to come, I’ve been massively impressed. I just hope the injuries are behind him for good.
Marouane Fellaini
I don’t think anyone expected such a turnaround from big Marouane Fellaini, but he’s been excellent. Mourinho absolutely loves tall, powerful midfielders like the Belgian, but he’s been playing like a man possessed at the start of this season.
He’s scored four crucial goals for the Red Devils, whilst winning the midfield battle almost single-handedly at times. We all know there has been some pressure on his shoulders from the Old Trafford crowd over the last couple of years, but he’s silencing them in the perfect way right now.
Ashley Young
Out of nowhere, Ashley Young is now starting at left-back for Manchester United. Forget about Luke Shaw, forget about Mourinho signing someone, he’s found an old, reliable head upon whom he can trust. Notice a trend here?
Not only will Young work dilligently going backwards, he also plays a major part when attacking, too. He’s delivered some sumptuous crosses into the box already, two of which have resulted in assists. He’s playing wonderfully right now.
