Manchester United and the rest of the footballing world have been rather harsh in the criticism of Wayne Rooney at the start of this season. The England international hasn’t had the best of starts, but he has been taking some heavy stick from large portions of the United fanbase.
That has led to Rooney being dropped from the starting line-up, and on top of that, his confidence must be totally shot following everything that’s happened. However, his strike partner Marcus Rashford has leapt to his defence.
“Criticism about Wayne is unfair. Definitely. He has won everything for this club.” Marcus Rashford is quoted as saying.
“He is about to beat the club record for goals, he’s got the England appearance record and goals record, he’s got a lot of achievements and a lot of things to be proud of.
“So I just think — give him time and all this will go away.”
At the end of the day, what happens on the football field will always prevail, and if he goes out and starts banging in the goals again this little period will be forgotten about.
The concern for Wayne must be just who he displaces from the starting line-up. Everyone in there is playing out of their skin at the moment, so our captain will likely have to prove his worth in the cup competitions and force his way back in.
