Mason Greenwood names Wayne Rooney as his Man United role model

Manchester United Football Club has played host to some of the finest players this sport has ever seen. From Sir Bobby Charlton to George Best, to Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes. Generation-on-generation, Old Trafford has always been the greatest stage.

Recently, though, United fans haven’t had an awful lot to cheer. Since Sir Alex Ferguson left, things have been trending downhill. At this point, legends aren’t being born – though they can still be fondly remembered and idolised.

While speaking to the media, young Mason Greenwood was asked about the players he looks up to. The talented teenager named Man United legend Wayne Rooney as his role model – while hoping he’ll get to meet him one day…

“It has to be Rooney,” he said per the Daily Mail. “The Brazilian Ronaldo, too. They’ve always stood out for me and I’ve always looked up to them. Ronaldo was quite a while ago but my dad used to show me clips of him.

“Rooney is such a great goalscorer and that is what I want to be. You have to have a role model. I’ve never seen him, though. I’ve watched his games and the highlights on YouTube. Hopefully, I’ll get to meet him one day.”

The pair must have both just missed each other. When Rooney was still around during the Louis van Gaal days, Greenwood would have only been in his mid-teens but I’m still surprised they never crossed paths.

That said, having Rooney as your idol certainly could be worse. We’re talking about a man who’s top scorer for England and United. That’s no mean feat.

If Greenwood wants any chance at breaking that record, then he has to remain just as consistent as Rooney did during his teenage years. The new kid on the block has certainly made a positive start, and no doubt more first-team chances will come his way soon.
