Manchester United Football Club play their penultimate Premier League game of the season this evening, away at Southampton. The Red Devils’ hopes of finishing in the top four are all-but over, so in a sense, this game is rather meaningless.
Date: 17th May, 2017.
Time: 19:45 UK time.
Venue: St Mary’s Stadium.
Referee: Mike Dean.
With that said, Jose Mourinho and his players will be wanting to head into their Europa League final with some morale and momentum. After two back-to-back losses against Arsenal and Tottenham respectively, it’s quite important that we get at least one positive result from our remaining two games.
Injury News
As we all know, long term injuries have absolutely decimated our squad. Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcos Rojo suffered ligament damage in the same game which was a major blow. Since then, both Ashley Young and Luke Shaw have been ruled out for the remainder of the season, and Timothy Fosu-Mensah will miss out too.
Paul Pogba won’t play as he’s mourning the tragic loss of his father, and Marouane Fellaini is serving the final game of his suspension. The manager has also confirmed that Daley Blind will be rested.
Last Meeting
The last time these two sides clashed was in the EFL Cup final. It was a close affair decided by some brilliance from Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The 35-year-old Swede scored a brace, either side of a Jesse Lingard finish.
Claude Puel’s men will be out for revenge as they were probably justified to feel hard done by in that match.
Score prediction: Southampton 1-1 Manchester United
Our players just look so demotivated right now, and you cannot really blame them. There is only one important fixture left, and this game tonight is just a match that they want to get out of the way as quickly as possible.
For that reason, I can see another close match on the cards. With nothing to play for, I don’t believe the team will be separated. I fancy Anthony Martial to get on the scoresheet if he starts.
The 2017/18 Manchester United Away kit
The new United away kit is out now, and it’s a welcome break from the monotonous away kits we keep seeing everywhere else. Here it is announced on Twitter:
