Match Preview: United vs Liverpool (Capital One Cup)

Manchester United simply have to bounce back in the Capital One Cup tonight. The Red Devils take on Liverpool for the second time in quick succession, and after suffering a 1-0 defeat last time, Moyes will be looking for revenge. Its hard to work out what changes David Moyes will make for this one, see our predicted line-up here.

KO: 19:45 BST
Venue: Old Trafford
Date: 25th September 2013

Both sides suffered defeat last time out. United got hammered 4-1 by City and Liverpool narrowly fell to a 1-0 defeat at home to Southampton. Moyes and Rodgers will both be looking for their sides to perform remarkably better than at weekend, so this game could be a tight affair.

Manchester United go into the game with only one player injured – unfortunately that player is Robin van Persie. Rafael is expected to return after a fairly long absence, and according to various reports, Phil Jones is back in training and in contention.

Whereas United have just lost their best player, Liverpool’s has returned; Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan is back and available for selection after his ten match domestic ban for biting an opponent. Ironically, in his pre-match press conference, Brendan Rodgers said he is ‘chomping at the bit’. They’ll be without a few key players though, Coutinho is out with a shoulder problem, Glen Johnson has an ankle sprain and Daniel Agger is suffering with a rib injury.

I fully expect United to go into the game with a mixture of youth and experience. Hopefully players like Adnan Januzaj, Rafael, and Wilfried Zaha will get their chance. Also Javier Hernandez, Shinji Kagawa and Jonny Evans need games.

Liverpool’s squad isn’t as deep as United’s, so they’ll probably go for a stronger starting line-up. Mingolet will probably continue in goal, the aforementioned Suarez will almost certainly return, and everyone’s favourite scouser (not) Gerrard will probably play.

This game is almost a must win for Moyes, so United need to go out and play some nice football. Come on Reds!

Score Prediction: Manchester United 2-1 Liverpool
