Matic heaps praise on McTominay, says he’s the ‘complete footballer’

Manchester United Football Club are certainly trending in the right direction under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Baby Faced Assassin has the Red Devils playing some pretty good stuff, while signings are being made to improve this squad on the whole.

Credit where it’s due, as the Norweigan has also shown a willingness to invest in youth and give homegrown academy products a chance. Amongst those is Scott McTominay, who was arguably United’s best player this term – before he went down with injury.

The good news is that the Scotland international has now returned, with his midfield partner, Nemanja Matic, heaping praise on his teammate McTominay:

“He is a very important player for us. He is very professional,” Nemanja Matic told BBC Radio 5 Live, transcribed by the Manchester Evening News.

“He has a lot of quality and he has a great character. I like to see how he trains and how he plays. I am sure over the next 10/15 years, he will be very important for United. Every single day he gives his best and that’s what the main difference between players is.

“He has that mentality. I can see myself 10 years ago. The way he approaches games, how he listens to coaches and other players. Scott is one of those who is a complete football player, he is exactly what Manchester United needs.”

McTominay has definitely improved his game massively over the last twelve months or so. The 23-year-old now looks like a real leader, a commander, someone who his teammates can look to. That’s future captain material right there.

It’s nice to see the praise coming from one of the best holding-midfielders we’ve seen in the Premier League over the last decade or so, too. I guess it always means more when it comes from your fellow professionals.

McTominay has the mentality, drive and desire. Ironically, that’ll definitely cost Matic his long-term place in the team, but United are looking to move forward and the Scot will be a key part of our squad for the next decade-plus.

Hopefully, McTominay can now stay injury-free until the season’s end and start putting in those insanely good performances he was giving us before his injury on Boxing Day.
