Manchester United’s rebuilding job was always going to be a tough one. It was always going to take more than one transfer window, too…
Well, the list of players who could potentially be sold during this summer just got a little longer. According to ESPN, Nemanja Matic is seeking talks with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over his future – after being made aware of interest from both Inter Milan and AC Milan.
Furthermore, ESPN’s sources are telling them that Inter have ‘indicated a willingness’ to make a player-plus-cash offer for Matic. Apparently, they’re ready to pay £10million cash plus Radja Nainggolan for the Serbian.
Understandably, Matic is keen for talks with his current manager to talk about the Italian interest, to work out whether he’s firmly in Solskjaer’s plans going into the 2019/20 campaign.
The player is expected to jet out for pre-season tour on Sunday, and right now, his Old Trafford future rests in Solskjaer’s hands.
United paid £40million to acquire Matic just two summers ago. After an excellent first campaign, things somewhat tailed off last year and that led to Scott McTominay taking over as the starter in the defensive-midfield role.
That must be playing on Matic’s mind and you can see why a move to the Serie A would be an interesting proposition for him. It’s a slower-paced style and that’d suit the Serb at this stage in his career.
I’m not sure about Nainggolan, though. Aged 31, he’s in a similar situation to Matic so it’d be a like-for-like swap in a sense. Personally, I’d much prefer to see the Reds look at someone younger.
ESPN does state that United are interested in Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff… That’d be the better move in my opinion.
