Manchester United Football Club are seemingly focused on getting a Jadon Sancho deal done this summer. However, the Red Devils are also looking at adding to their backline. Enter, Matthijs de Ligt…
This isn’t the first time United have been linked with the Dutchman. Just last summer, the Red Devils were heavily interested in acquiring the centre-half, though, in the end, it was Juventus who’d overtake us in the race and win his signature.
Today, De Ligt is back being linked with an Old Trafford switch. The story comes from The Independent. They’re stating that the classy 20-year-old defender is a long-term United target, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to strengthen his defence.
However, there’s a small caveat. Signing De Ligt ‘could prove tricky’, given he’s just won a Serie A title in his first season with the Turin-based outfit.
In terms of outgoings, United are looking to move on from Phil Jones in the centre-back swap. Letting him go and replacing the Englishman with De Ligt would be an absolute masterstroke – though it’s clearly not going to be easy to get this move done.
Will a deal happen?
I would be extremely surprised. De Ligt had a solid first term with Juve, though I’m fairly sure he’ll want to stay there and improve further. Plus, league titles are practically a guarantee with the Old Lady right now. United would have to pull off something special to make it #21 next term.
Juve aren’t going to want to sell someone they’ve heavily invested in, either. They paid almost £70m for him, they’d want to greatly profit on that.
Would he fit in at United?
Absolutely. Harry Maguire needs a long-term partner. De Ligt would fill that void wonderfully. There’s still lingering doubts about Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe, both cannot stay fit. As for Victor Lindelof, he’s solid, but a title-winning starting centre-back? I’m not sure…
For now, take this one with a pinch of salt as a lot would have to happen for this deal to be done. I’d love to see De Ligt wearing United red, though…
