Matthijs de Ligt could become a ‘hot topic’ for Man United transfer this summer

Man United could make a genuine attempt to sign Matthijs de Ligt this summer, if Erik ten Hag remains in charge.

Manchester United Football club have not looked the same defensively this season. In large part, that could be down to the absence of Lisandro Martinez. Well, the Argentine is now back and ready to make up for lost time.

It’s still fair to say that the likes of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof aren’t trusted by Erik ten Hag. After all, he’s tried to move away from both of them over the last year or so.

That could mean the Reds may be in the market for a new centre-half, with Florian Plettenberg throwing a familiar name into the ring; Matthijs de Ligt.

The Dutchman was heavily linked with an Old Trafford switch when he left Ajax a few years ago, though he’d choose Bayern Munich instead.

Florian Plettenberg believes that De Ligt is no longer happy in Bavaria, due to the fact he is not a regular starter. Although a move this month has been ruled out, the defender could leave in the summer.

If Ten Hag remains in charge, the top-class 24-year-old could become a ‘hot topic’ for United in the summer…

The prospect of a De Ligt and Martinez partnership is an exciting one. They’d provide the perfect blend of aggression and calmness, while also being young enough to become our back two for the next half-decade at the very least.

In all likelihood, it’d mean that at least one of Maguire or Lindelof would have to leave first, which is not going to be an easy task.

De Ligt would also not come cheaply despite the fact that he’s now out of favour over in Germany. You’d also bet good money on the fact that other clubs would be keen on bringing in the centre-half, meaning the competition for his signature would be fierce.
