Matthijs de Ligt ‘made clear’ his intention to join Man United

Mathijs de Ligt is ready to make the move to Manchester, with a personal agreement already in place with United.

Manchester United Football Club have to sign a defender of real quality this summer. Erik ten Hag has to replace Raphael Varane’s minutes with genuine quality, as the Old Trafford side look to find some consistency at the heart of defence.

The name now at the front of the queue is Matthijs de Ligt. There was a time where Jarrad Branthwaite felt like the leading candidate, though the Reds are seemingly going to be priced out of a move for the Englishman.

De Ligt certainly isn’t a bad fall-back option to have though…

Journalist Christian Falk has provided the latest on that front, confirming that the player has now ‘made clear’ his intention to join United this summer. De Ligt has told Bayern Munich that he would like to move to the Theatre of Dreams.

United are still pushing for the signing, wanting the 24-year-old to sign a contract until 2027. Apparently, the Reds have already reached an agreement over personal terms.

Now, all that’s left to sort out is the transfer fee. Bayern are holding out for a deal that could potentially reach as much as £50m (60m euro). It’ll be interesting to see whether the Reds cave into those demands.

It feels like De Ligt has been around for ages. Largely due to the fact he made his first-team breakthrough as a very young teenager at Ajax. After a brief stint in Italy, the Dutchman made Germany his home two years ago.

Despite a fan-led petition reaching many thousands of signatures clamouring for De Ligt to stay in Bavaria, it does look like he’s ready for a change. Bayern themselves are set to sign Jonathan Tah, who is expected to take De Ligt’s place in the side.

My only concern here is the injuries. The Dutchman has had issues, mainly knee problems, and if those continue, this could be a real mistake by United. That said, it’s probably worth the roll of the dice…
