Matthijs de Ligt will succeed in the Premier League, according to former Man United coach Renee Meulensteen.
Manchester United Football Club handed a first start to Matthijs de Ligt against Liverpool on Sunday. Although the Old Trafford side were on the wrong end of a thumping, the Dutchman looked right at home at the heart of the Reds’ defence.
From minute one, De Ligt played with a real calmness and maturity that was admirable, forming an instant connection with former Bayern Munich teammate, Noussair Mazraoui, down that right-hand side.
The tackles were flying in. The interceptions were key. Sadly, like the rest of his teammates, De Ligt faded as the game wore on. It’s also worth noting the centre-half hasn’t played much football recently so he would’ve been exhausted by the time he was substituted off.
However, the positive signs were there for all to see. Former Red Devils coach Renee Meulensteen has also given De Ligt his backing, claiming that the new United signing is ‘equipped’ for Premier League football due to his physique and experience.
Check out what Meulensteen had to say in full here:
“I think he’s equipped for the Premier League football, because of his physique and he’s a young player with experience in Champions League.” Meulensteen told The Sun.
“It’s going to be interesting run of developments in the upcoming games whether Ten Hag is going to go for a partnership with De Ligt and [Lisandro] Martinez which means [Harry] Maguire is falling by the wayside again.”
It does feel like De Ligt has been around for absolutely ages, but that comes from the fact he broke into the Ajax team as a 17-year-old. Since then, he has proven his quality at both Juventus and Bayern Munich.
Now it’s United’s turn to benefit from De Ligt’s quality. I reckon the Dutchman will quickly emerge as a key player, leaving Harry Maguire completely out of the fold.
What I am intrigued to witness is what happens when Leny Yoro is back fit… The club will have De Ligt, Yoro and Lisandro Martinez fighting for two positions in the side. Someone is going to be unhappy…
