Man United are set for one final push to acquire Frenkie de Jong this summer.
We get it, we’re all pretty fed up with the back-and-forth that the Frenkie de Jong saga has brought. However, Manchester United still aren’t willing to throw in the towel in their pursuit.
Erik ten Hag immediately identified the Barcelona midfielder as their number one priority going into the summer, with the transfer pendulum swinging back and forth.
The latest update in the saga comes from Catalan media outlet Sport (Tuesday print edition). Thanks to Sport Witness for their translation…
Sport’s story covers De Jong’s wage situation in depth, as we all know, that’s why there are doubts about the Dutchman’s future at the Catalan outfit.
De Jong is owed money due to deferred wages, though, understandably, the player doesn’t want to sort out his future until that money he’s owed is paid.
Apparently, a meeting is set for ‘very soon’, with hope that those talks can push things forward and make this move happen.

On top of that, Sport state that United ‘know they are favourites’ to sign the top star. They’re also willing to wait until the end of the window. It’s also claimed that Ten Hag has been speaking to De Jong on a regular basis.
Understandably, United are wanting to leave no stone unturned in their pursuit of De Jong, ensuring absolutely every angle has been covered before moving away from the Dutchman.
As things stand, I still think it’s going to be pretty tough for United to get this deal done. De Jong’s preference has always been to remain with Barca. Unless something drastic happens, I honestly don’t see his stance changing over the next few weeks.
As much as it’d be a dream signing, I don’t think we’re too far away from the Red Devils firmly exploring other options.

De Jong and Fred are both deep lying playmakers. United still lack a defensive midfielder. McTominay is not a defensive midfielder, more an all rounder.
If the deal for De Jong fails, Ruben Neves is an ideal choice, but United will still require someone to do the hard graft and tackle people
