Mehdi Benatia on Manchester United’s wishlist

Roma defender Mehdi Benatia is fast emerging as one of the most sought-after centre-backs in world football after an excellent season in the Serie A. The 27-year old has refused to pen a new deal in Italy, and is set to be at the heart of a three-club bidding war, according to The Express.

The clubs chasing him say all you need to know about the Moroccan defender’s abilities – Manchester United, Chelsea and Real Madrid are in the hunt to sign the tall centre-back, with a £30million fee being touted by the English and Italian press.

Manchester United still need to replace both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, and we’re now well into the last month of the transfer window and no defensive deal has been done yet. We know that a deal for Thomas Vermaelen could potentially happen, but personally I’d much prefer to see Benetia come in.

Benatia’s pace, aerial ability, and in particular his passing out from the back could be a real asset to Manchester United’s back-line, and unlike Thomas Vermaelen, Benatia has a much better record in terms of injuries.

Who would you prefer, Vermaelen or Benetia? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
