Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is seen as the face of the new Manchester United regime that is bringing happiness back to Old Trafford.
The Baby Faced Assassin simply cannot do it all on his own, though. Behind the scenes, he has a brilliant team of backroom staff that are all helping out in different ways. Perhaps the most underrated component is Mike Phelan.
Now, Sir Alex Ferguson’s old assistant manager is willing to stay at United on one condition, the Daily Mail reports. They say that Phelan will commit to the club long-term should he get ‘structural management assurances’ from the club.
I think it’s fair to say that he’s well within his rights to ask for that. United haven’t been a well-run club over the last few years, with many calls for a Director of Football role being created, as well as other positions that could ease the work that the coaching staff have to do.
In that regard, United are being somewhat left behind by their rivals and it’s great to see Phelan pushing the board to do something about it. At the end of the day, there’s only so much this coaching staff can do, it’s up to the powers-that-be to want to return this club to its former glories and credit to the assistant manager for making this stand.
