Erik ten Hag is already beginning to form his back room staff at Man United.
Manchester United’s incoming manager won the Eredivisie title with Ajax last night, which isn’t a bad parting gift, is it?
Erik ten Hag will make the move to Old Trafford filled with promise aplenty. This is an excellent coach who has shaped and moulded Ajax into an outstanding club side.
Repeating the feat at United will be much tougher, given the current shape of the squad and toughness of the Premier League.
Well, Ten Hag is already starting to build his setup. Apparently, Mitchell van der Gaag, who is currently Ten Hag’s assistant at Ajax, has ‘reached’ a ’full agreement’ To join United’s coaching staff.
Furthermore, Fabrizio Romano states that it’s now ‘just a matter of time’ before Van der Gaag finalises the contract and follows his boss to the Theatre of Dreams.
Romano also drops another snippet of information, claiming Steve McClaren could potentially make a sensational return to Manchester.
This makes total sense. The links to Van der Gaag have become more and more frequent. But Ten Hag will want to surround himself with the same back room team that worked so well together at Ajax.
I’m not going to sit here and tell you that Van der Gaag is the best thing since sliced bread, but he’s obviously made a positive impact on that young Ajax side. Helping develop their players and turning them into some of the best in the business.
The ex-centre-half had only been at Ajax for just one season, but Ten Hag clearly trusts him enough to bring him along to Manchester in some sort of role. Whether that’s as an assistant manager or just a regular coach remains to be seen.
