Cast your mind back just over twelve months when Louis van Gaal spent a huge £38million on the relative unknown, Anthony Martial. The Frenchman made an instant impact with a brilliant solo goal on debut against none other than Liverpool – and played a massive part in our successes last campaign.
However, things have been a struggle for the 20-year-old both on and off the field. His private life has been, shall we say ‘busy, and injuries haven’t helped the cause.
Now, the Daily Telegraph say that Jose Mourinho is ‘concerned’ about the form of Anthony Martial, who completed sixty minutes at the weekend before being subbed off.
It’s true, it hasn’t been the best of starts to the season for the French forward. He looks lacking in confidence, and that is totally understandable if the reports about the #9 jersey being taken off him without warning are correct.
He has to remain professional, though, because at the end of the day the club are still paying him huge wages. He will come good given some regular starts. We’ve seen just how devastating of a player he is.
