Manchester United eventually succumbed to defeat in the UEFA Super Cup against Real Madrid on Tuesday night, in a game that really highlighted the gulf in class between Los Blancos and the rest of Europe. However, on the whole, Jose Mourinho has to be happy.
The Red Devils were by no means embarrassed by their rivals, with the match finishing 2-1, and on another day, if the officials get the offside call correct, the result could have been different.
Madrid dominated the first half, but as things wore on, Mourinho made an all-important change which gave us a much better footing in the match. The self-proclaimed Special One called on Marouane Fellaini, and the Belgium international was truly outstanding.
After the match, Mourinho was asked about the performance of the midfielder, and he hailed his display as ‘fantastic’, before seemingly remaining upbeat about the season ahead.
“Fantastic, and Marouane is just an example of that group and spirit,” Mourinho told reporters, quoted by the Manchester Evening News. “We were losing 2-0 to a fantastic team and we go for the 2-1 and Marouane is injured and then we miss the Rashford chance with the keeper, we fought until Cristiano got onto the pitch.”
“We lost a game, a cup, but we didn’t lose the season. Our season starts Sunday for us.”
Seriously, massive credit has to go to Fellaini. A large portion of the fanbase have a pre-formed opinion about him and unfortunately, that’ll never change. However, he isn’t letting that get under his skin, and he keeps performing at a high level.
You can understand exactly why Mourinho is keeping the faith with his man, and I feel that if he’s continued to be used in the correct manner, Fellaini could have a huge season.
