The campaign is thankfully over, though it’s now time to draw up our MUFC Team of the Season for this forgettable 2021/22 campaign.

Well, I guess this is a year we will not remember fondly. Even during the tough times since Sir Alex Ferguson called it quits, at least Manchester United have often put up a fight. Even that deserted us over the last nine months.

I have to be honest. This is the most unlikable set of players we’ve ever had to follow. I’m not even sure what it is, but these lads just aren’t all that popular with the fans. Is it the lack of desire? The lack of trust? Or the simple fact that this squad just isn’t good enough? Who knows…

Alas, as they say, the show must go on. We’ve always done our Team of the Season following the final Premier League game of the year, so here we go again.

Check out our MUFC Team of the Season for 2021/22 in full here:

David de Gea has been okay. Nothing more, nothing less. He’s made the saves you’d expect him to make but distribution-wise, it has been somewhat disappointing.

The full-backs selected tell you everything you need to know about how bad we’ve been this term. Alex Telles and Diogo Dalot haven’t been anywhere near the required level – but they’re the best we have. That, in itself, is just sad. The same can be said for Harry Maguire. Again, he’s been way below par but he still takes his place in this side alongside Raphael Varane. Even the Frenchman, who has won multiple Champions Leagues, has been somewhat average.

In the midfield area, the story is the same. Bruno Fernandes has often been our go-to man but even he has fallen into the bad habits. Wayward passes and a poor attitude but again, he’s the best we have. I believe both Fred and Scott McTominay deserve praise. They’ve both improved over the last nine months but in an ideal world, these guys would be squad players rather than guaranteed starters.

Cristiano Ronaldo will always score goals galore in any side. He’s managed to carry us to victories at times, particularly late on in the season. The Portugal star was the easiest man to pick. Jadon Sancho and Anthony Elanga are young and they too have been hit and miss. As the season wore on, the pair improved. We have been given every reason to believe in these guys going forward.

Again, this team on paper tells you everything you need to know about how bad we’ve been. Half of these guys wouldn’t get lose to the bench of Liverpool or Manchester City, never mind in a best XI! That is exactly why we’re in this situation right now.
