Manchester United Football Club kicked off their season in stellar fashion. Beating Chelsea 4-0, under any circumstance, is hugely positive.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is intent on taking this team in a different direction under a different philosophy. We have to be impressed with the early signs.
A changing of the guard could well be on the horizon, with the Manchester Evening News discussing United’s midfield, in particular. They say that come next summer, the Red Devils’ 31-year-old Nemanja Matic could be ‘feasibly released’ just next summer…
Matic’s contract does expire in just under twelve months time, and those legs certainly looked a little older on pre-season tour.
It just doesn’t feel like he has the energy to cover the amount of ground that’s now needed at the highest level. Thankfully, the growth of Scott McTominay has walked hand-in-hand with the Serb’s decline, and the Scot is doing a wonderful job at this point in time.
United have had a tendency of signing struggling players to new contracts in order to assure they get some sort of transfer fee back for the player. It’s something Solskjaer has to get away from, and letting Matic go would be a statement of intent.
Don’t forget that James Garner is waiting in the wings, too. He’s a mega-talented young man and the MEN go as far as saying his promotion to the first-team is ‘inevitable’…
